Since Nov. 2024, President Donald J. Trump has been instituting order after order, causing a mixture of feelings in the melting pot that makes up the United States. From joy to uproar, Trump is shaking up the political scene.
In an interview with CNN’s Chief Political Correspondent, Dana Bash, Trump discussed the ongoing war with Iran and made great mention of his “SAVE America Act,” an initiative that the President is passionate about instating.
In the interview, Trump discussed the Texas US Senate Republican Primary runoff race, in which Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton go head to head in an advanced runoff election. He claims that he will have to make a decision between the two.
Trump said that this decision will be made “fairly shortly,” and that the act is top priority, aside from the conflict with Iran. Bash asserted that Trump made it clear he would like both candidates to back the act with no opposition.
Trump told Bash, “uh, I like John Cornyn, get along with him well. Get along with both of them very well. But we have go in with the SAVE America Act.”
Cornyn, a supporter of the act, has yet to specify if he would be willing to make changes to Senate guidelines in order to enact this bill. This would mean “eliminating the filibuster,” according to CNN. He told CNN that “there’s not the votes in the Republican conference to change those rules.”
“The Senate has to act on it,” Trump told Bash. “The House on it. And I don’t want the watered down one—that doesn’t mean anything.”
For Attorney General Paxton, making alterations to senate rules and a scrapping of the filibuster in order to pass this piece of legislation would cause him to potentially remove himself from the runoff race.
He took to the social media platform, X, and wrote, “The Save America Act is the most important bill the U.S. Senate could ever pass, and I’m committed to helping President Trump get it done.”
In response, Cornyn assured Texans that he is in support of the bill and what it stands for.
“I repeat what I have consistently said: I support the bill and have encouraged Senate Republicans to get it done.”
Trump further explained his headspace regarding the act, mentioning some of its counterparts. A major component, Voter Identification, was widely discussed. Trump says that mail-in ballots should be no longer, aside from the disabled, the ill, military personnel, or the traveling American.
“In addition to requiring voter ID to vote in federal elections, the bill would mandate documentary proof of US citizenship to register to vote in federal elections,” reported CNN.
The President also went into detail about the act’s transgender policies, an addition to the initiative. He claims that transgender women have no place in “women’s” sports, and that transgender healthcare services for youth need to come to an end.
