Farmington, MO.- The red carpet stretched across the entrance of the First State Community Center on Friday night, as Farmington High School and New Heights Church joined a global movement to host “Night to Shine”, a prom experience designed for students with special needs.
The Feb.13 event marked the 10th anniversary of the initiative, which is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. What began as a vision to provide a high-end social experience for the special experience for the special needs community has grown into a phenomenon, with Farmington serving as a local hub for the celebration.
“Our goal is to honor God with a love the world seldom sees on display”, organizers said in a statement. “Our intentions are to make every guest feel like she is the belle of the ball, or he is the prince of all dreams.”
The evening spared no detail in creating a “”royal atmosphere. Upon arrival, guests were treated to professional hair styling, makeup application, and shoe-shining service. To ensure a grand entrance, students were driven in limousines and party buses before walking a red carpet flanked by “paparazzi” and cheering volunteers.
Inside, the community of the event was the “Buddy” system, where Farmington High School students volunteer to escort guests throughout the night. These pairs shared a dinner, hid the dance floor, and visited various stations, including a photo booth.
The partnership between the high school and New Heights Church highlighted a massive community effort. Dozens of local leaders, hairdressers and student volunteers worked behind the scenes to coordinate the logistics of the four-hour event.
By the end of the night, every guest was crowned a king or queen of the prom, a signature moment of the NIght to Shine program intended to celebrate the intrinsic value of every participant.
