Students at Farmington High School are taking the lead on campus improvements this school year through RSVP,Raising Student Voices and Participation, a program designed to bridge the gap between student concerns and tangible solutions.
Originally launched last year by former FHS dual credit advisor Dr. Brian Reeves, the program has quickly evolved into a powerhouse of student advocacy. This year, RSVP members are joining forces with the National Honor Society to address specific issues identified by the student body during a series of leadership summits.
“The core mission of RSVP is to listen to the needs and concerns of the student body,” said Madellyn Washington, president of RSVP. “We are aware of the issues pressing FHS and the district per student, we can put our committees to work.”
Those committees are focusing on several key pillars of the high school experience, including cafeteria services, school spirit, inclusivity, and “BLITZ Days”. They are even looking at practical daily logistics like hallway flow and passing period behaviour to ensure a more seamless school day.
The impact of the group is already visible to students during their lunch hour. Recent successful initiatives include the installation of new microwaves for student use and their introduction of grade-level barbecue days, allowing students to enjoy outdoor meals.
Looking ahead, the organization has set a goal to complete three summits this academic year. Washington noted that by the end of 2026, she hopes the committees are fully integrated with other campus clubs to promote programs like “Adopt-A-Hallway”, which supports campus cleanliness and health.
“This is a large and new initiative that we are still working out,” Washington said.
As the school year progresses, RSVP plans to host monthly training sessions to keep members motivated and ensure that every student at Farmington High feels seen and heard.
