Meet my Teacher- Mrs.Callahan
1. Why are you a special education teacher?
I was inspired to become a special education teacher because of my brother, Kristopher, who has Down syndrome. Throughout his educational journey and life, Kristopher received incredible support from our family, friends, teachers, and members of the community. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the love, patience, and compassion extended to him, and it left a lasting impact on me. That experience instilled in me a deep desire to provide that same level of care and support to other students like Kristopher.
2. Was there a teacher that inspired you to teach?
While there wasn’t one specific teacher who inspired me to pursue education, I grew up in a family full of educators. Being surrounded by their passion and dedication deeply influenced how I envisioned my future beyond high school.
3. How long have you been a teacher? What subjects and schools?
This will be my sixth year teaching special education. I began my career as a co-teacher at Lincoln Intermediate School, where I spent one year before transitioning to the high school. During my first year at the high school, I co-taught in a geometry classroom. For the past three years, I have been in my current role, teaching in a self-contained special education classroom.
4. What motivates you as a teacher?
As mentioned earlier, my inspiration to become a teacher stems from my brother, Kristopher. His success in school and in life continues to motivate me every day. I strive to provide my students with the same love, care, and support that Kristopher was so fortunate to receive.
5. What are some hobbies you have outside of school?
While I may not have many hobbies, my favorite way to spend time is simply being with my husband and our two kids. I also enjoy spending time at the lake whenever possible—it's one of my favorite places to relax and recharge.
6. What kind of student were you in high school?
As a student, I was quiet and always tried my best to meet my teachers’ expectations. I liked being helpful and doing well in school. Even though I was more on the reserved side, I stayed involved in several clubs, activities, and sports, which allowed me to connect with others and be part of the school community.
7. Why are you the Godly Girls Gathering sponsor?
I chose to become the sponsor of the Godly Girls Gathering to help build meaningful relationships with students outside of my classroom. I believe it’s important to create a space where young women can come together to support one another and grow in their faith journey. It’s especially meaningful to me because I didn’t have a group like this when I was in high school, so it’s wonderful to see it offered here.
8. Who is your "teacher bestie"?
I would have to say that Mrs. Pingel and Ms. Roney are my “teacher besties.” They are always there to support me whether that is through a listening ear, advice given, or stepping in whenever I need help. I truly don’t know what I would do without them!
9. What education do I have?
I earned my bachelor's degree in Special Education: Cross-Categorical Disabilities Mild to Moderate (Grades K-12) and Elementary Education (Grades 1-6) from Missouri Baptist University. Additionally, I am on track to graduate this May (2026) with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Southeast Missouri State University.
