Within the Farmington School District, there are many levels in the music program such as Beginning Band in grade 7, Advanced Band in grade 8, and then Symphonic and Concert Band throughout high school. Farmington High School also offers a Chamber of Music and Marching Band.
Starting January 7, 2025, the second semester will begin which also means Symphonic and Concert Band will be starting. Students auditioned and decisions were made regarding who made either Symphonic Band or Concert Band. Auditions began on November 14 and results were released on November 21.
Symphonic Band is the top band at FHS. Only the top players of each section make it. In total, both bands have two concerts in the spring as well as the MSHSAA Large Ensemble Festival in April.
“The way this is decided is during the audition, students get points for fundamentals like tone, rhythm, notes etc,” stated Head director Mari Porter. “The scores determine who makes which band.”
The audition process from a student perspective is a page that students have to practice which includes scales and pre-prepared music pieces as well as sight reading. How well students score on these decides which band a player makes, whether that be Concert Band or Symphonic Band
Concert Band is the band that students automatically make. From there, the directors decide who is going to make Concert and who makes Symphonic based off of the score they receive during their audition. There are lots of great players in Concert Band.
On the other hand, Symphonic Band is mostly made up of upperclassmen, but in some cases, there are underclassmen who make it.
“The main difference is the difficulty of the music and sight reading,” Porter explained. “Concert Band generally plays grade 2-3 pieces and Symphonic Band will play grade 3-5 or so depending on the year.”
Congratulations to everyone who made Symphonic and Concert Band. Have a great season we cant wait to see what all you do this year.
