Imagine at school some of the students forget deodorant or a vital necessity! Luckily, Dr. Courtney McIntyre, a biomedical science teacher at Farmington High School, now has a Wellness Wall outside her room, which was made possible with the help of Health Occupations Students of America, or HOSA. Students can run and grab deodorant or other hygiene products during passing time or whenever they have free time.
“We currently have pens, pencils, dental floss, feminine hygiene products, germ-x, mints, lifesavers, hair ties, band-aids, hand wipes, lotion, men’s deodorant, and women’s deodorant,” McIntyre said. “HOSA wanted to provide a service for the students to have a place to grab something they may need—something to make them feel well. We felt like they needed a central place to grab those items.”
These items are great additions to the school and help the students of FHS tremendously. This shows that McIntyre cares wholeheartedly and is trying to spread her love for the community. She is starting small and making big impacts with the inclusion of the Wellness Wall.
“Every day, students go about their day often needing a pen or pencil, deodorant, or feminine hygiene products,” McIntyre mentioned. “We felt like–if you see a need, meet a need! This was a great opportunity for us to provide a service to our fellow classmates.”
McIntyre is trying her best to include the FHS students and their ideas while still maintaining the Wellness Wall by keeping it stocked with all sorts of supplies that will benefit students during the winter months.
“We are open to any ideas from students on items that would be helpful for students,” McIntyre said. “We have also talked about seasonal items—gloves, hats, hand warmers for the winter, and ponchos for the springtime.”
McIntyre tries her best to ensure that every student feels seen and included. She also wants to bring joy to the students of FHS and improve their school days. McIntyre is using the Wellness Wall to benefit students and give them a place they can rely on for supplies.
“We hope it creates an impact—especially for those that need a little pick-me-up—whether it be needing a pen, pencil, band-aid, or even some deodorant. We hope it brings a little sunshine or peace of mind to someone’s day,” McIntyre explained.
The Wellness Wall is a new aspect of FHS that will help the community come together and support the students. Students, staff, or anyone interested in helping can drop off items in McIntyre’s room, 225, or at the Career Academy with Melissa Kelly.
