National Honor Society, or NHS, is a nationwide program that recognizes high school students who meet and uphold academic qualifications. Students selected for NHS are high achievers in terms of school work and community service. These students also have positive recommendations made by staff members.
High school juniors and seniors interested in NHS will complete an application stating their previous academic acquisitions, service projects, leadership roles, and more. Then, students selected for the program will attend a formal ceremony in which they will be inducted into the program.
At Farmington High School, the National Honor Society strives to encourage academic excellence and service within the community. Senior Ava Obenauer is the president of the FHS National Honor Society.
Obenauer has been an active member of the National Honor Society since her junior year at FHS. At the end of the year, Obenauer interviewed for an officer position and unexpectedly became the president.
“I was initially going for the secretary position,” Obenauer explained. “The National Honor Society sent out an officer application form. I filled out the form, and they scheduled my interview.”
With this news in mind, Obenauer immediately began brainstorming what she wanted to accomplish as president. Obenenauer established goals and developed a vague game plan. This school year, she has several priorities and goals as president of the NHS.
“One of my main priorities for the National Honor Society in general is to give back to our school and community,” said Obenauer. “We help different organizations and charities and we have already planned team-ups with different clubs around the school. We would like to get more involved in the community this year.”
The FHS National Honor Society participates in several school-sanctioned activities and events throughout the year such as Habitat for Humanity and helping out in various nursing homes in the community.
“I am focused on nursing homes,” Obenauer stated. “So far, I have partnered with Key Club since they visit nursing homes often. We have discussed visiting the Alzheimer’s Unit.”
The FHS National Honor Society chapter is significantly different from other chapters throughout Missouri. According to Obenauer, the NHS is dedicated and strictly committed to serving the community. The members of the NHS are constantly finding ways to help out within the community and interact with the people.
There are several surface requirements that students must meet in order for their candidacy to be considered. For example, students must have a grade point average of at least a 3.7 or higher unweighted cumulative average or a 4.0 or higher cumulative average. Overall, students must demonstrate leadership skills, academic achievement, and a commitment to service.
Ava further explained that if applicants meet all of the criteria and exemplify outstanding and one-of-a-kind qualities, then they will be accepted as members of the FHS National Honor Society. Students will receive an update on their application status a few days after the applications are submitted.
“If you want to join the National Honor Society, clearly you have an interest,” Obenauer clarified.“You might as well join it! You will be helping our community. If you want to join strictly to meet Latin Honors requirements, we have plenty of service opportunities.”
