Q Is For Quarantine

The hardest part for me was not being able to see my friends

— Hannah Horn

The word quarantine has been bobbing around the halls at Farmington High School for quite some time. Many students have been pulled in and out of classes throughout the school year to become quarantined. And although hundreds of students have experienced what it’s like to get quarantined from school due to being in contact with COVID-19 many students have yet to experience this process.

The COVID-19 quarantine occurs to those who have been in contact with a positive case of COVID-19 or if they have tested positive for the disease. Additionally, whoever gets quarantined is asked to distance themselves from their community and to keep to the safeness of their home to slow the spread of COVID-19.

I have personally experienced several weeks of quarantine. While the time out wasn’t all that bad, I had much more free time to do what I wanted to do rather than being in school eight hours a day. The hardest part for me was school work, it was more difficult to focus being away from school which caused me to fall behind a bit.

Hundreds of other students at FHS have also experienced what it’s like to be in quarantine. Zabien Gusman explained, “My favorite part has been being able to not have to worry about waking up early so I can focus on getting more much-needed sleep in” And Hannah Horn’s favorite part of quarantine was “probably getting to work at my own pace with school work”.

There are also many disadvantages to being quarantined as well.“The hardest struggle during quarantine for me has been keeping in contact with my friends” replied Zabien Gusman. “The hardest part for me was not being able to see my friends,” remarked Hannah Horn.

As you can see both student’s answers to that question were very similar, it gets hard to not be able to see your friends as much as you would be able to in school. There are many advantages and disadvantages to being quarantined, but we should all keep in mind that being quarantined from school isn’t being done as a punishment. Its sole purpose is to help keep our school and community safe.
